Bolt launches first nationwide affordable dash-cam scheme for drivers
17 June 2024: Bolt, the global shared mobility platform, has launched the most affordable dash-cam scheme in the industry, and the first of its kind available to drivers nationwide. The offer, provided in partnership with CCTV provider Matrix iQ, allows Bolt drivers to purchase a compliant dash-cam at a significantly discounted price starting from £69, with a subsequent monthly £11.99 data-processing fee. A compliant system approved by licensing authorities can sometimes cost up to £700.
Pricing and installation
The installation and total costs will depend on the requirements of the relevant licensing area. Most cities allow self-installation, which includes a one-off hardware purchase of £69, and a monthly subscription for £11.99.
Where professional installation is either required (i.e. in London, Coventry, Cardiff, Nottingham and Manchester) or preferred, there is an additional one-off fee of £80. In Manchester specifically, the one-off hardware purchase is £109, due to the model of camera required by the licensing authority. Matrix iQ stands out from conventional installation centres by offering a personalised service, including home visits or appointments at a location of the driver’s choice, to accommodate their busy schedules.
Jason Camilleri, Senior Operations Manager at Bolt, said: “Drivers regularly tell us that a dash-cam can provide them with additional security and peace of mind. However, buying a compliant device can be expensive, with drivers citing the cost as the main obstacle to getting one. By making dash-cams more affordable, drivers can access the tools they need to create safer environments for themselves and their passengers.”
Dylan Taylor, Insurance Partnerships Manager at Matrix iQ, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Bolt to help drivers and passengers feel more secure with a reliable and affordable product that is fully compliant with local authority guidelines. I am delighted with the collaboration and looking forward to fulfilling our joint objectives and vision.”
The partnership is being supported by iRevolution Group with its claims management services and additional taxi tailored insurance products.
Scott Docherty, Broker Account Director at iRevolution Group, said: “We are delighted to work with Bolt and Matrix iQ on this shared initiative to assist drivers in adding an extra level of safety and security to their work. We hope that by providing a specialised claims service and taxi specific insurance products, that we can help when drivers need support the most.”
Device features
Each device contains forward-facing and driver-facing cameras, with 1080p resolution, and proven claims support behind the scenes. In the event of a non-fault collision, the device delivers crash detection data, to help with the claims process for the driver.
Data is stored remotely in the cloud and can be reviewed using a designated app, with the cameras being able to capture up to 31 days of footage. The device also contains an SOS panic button in case of safety incidents, which automatically uploads footage to the cloud when pressed.
Matrix iQ will also provide Bolt drivers with IT support, data handling and processing support, and flexible payment plans.
How drivers can order a camera
- Register with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and get an ICO number – all eligible drivers will need to register and pay a data protection fee before they purchase a camera to ensure they remain compliant.
- Visit the Matrix iQ website (bolt.matrixiq.com) – drivers will be asked to select the appropriate licensing authority, and to provide their vehicle registration number and ICO number.
- Camera installation – where a self-install option is possible, the camera will be dispatched to drivers directly. Where a professional installation needs to be arranged, Matrix iQ will contact drivers to arrange this, at a location of their choice.
When distributing cameras, Matrix iQ will provide drivers with vehicle signage that is compliant with the requirements of the relevant licensing authority. Drivers are required to display the signage in a prominent position within the vehicle to make passengers aware of the CCTV being in use.
