“Before working with Matrix iQ, our drivers were struggling to keep up with complex compliance requirements across the UK. With so many local councils and regulations to navigate, it was overwhelming for individual drivers to know what was needed, and many risked being non-compliant without even realising it.”
— Jason Camilleri, Senior Operations Manager, Bolt
Bolt, a multinational mobility company offering ride-hailing, food delivery, and car-sharing services, is on a mission to differentiate itself from competitors by prioritising driver wellbeing, respect, and safety.
However, it was becoming increasingly challenging to assist a large number of drivers across the UK and promote their safety while helping them comply with individual local council requirements.
When cameras aren’t council-approved, the law prevents drivers from using any of the footage, not for insurance claims or collision evidence.
This leaves drivers completely unprotected and vulnerable to serious compliance issues that could affect their ability to earn.
With many of different licensing authorities across the UK, each with its own specific CCTV requirements, Bolt drivers struggled to get the accurate information they needed to stay both safe and compliant.
Bolt had also discovered that many drivers were unaware they needed ICO registration to record within their vehicles, and that doing so without proper registration could land them in legal trouble.
Their drivers also voiced some consistent concerns:
• Drivers believed dash cameras were too expensive
• Privacy concerns around data usage
• Most drivers thought their current dash camera setup was compliant
The complexity was overwhelming for individual drivers trying to navigate compliance on their own. While the legal responsibility for compliance lies with the individual driver, Bolt wanted to ensure they were supporting their driver community in the best way possible to ensure both compliance and safety.
